Orange Shirt Day in honour of Aboriginal Residential School Survivors

Today we honour Aboriginal Residential School survivors by wearing orange shirts. Orange shirt day began in 2013 as a result of residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad, who shared her story at a legacy event in 2013. On her first day at residential school Phyllis had her new beloved orange shirt taken away from her. This experience is used today to teach students about the assimilation practices at that time. September 30 was chosen as the day as this was the day the aboriginal children were taken from their homes each year to be sent to the residential schools. Here at Auburn we want to encourage EVERYONE to wear orange and stand up and honour our Residential School Survivors.
