Today we end on a more sombre note as Ms. Hudson asks that we remember two anniversaries of events that have shaped our community and our country. The first event was the Halifax Explosion which occurred 102 years ago. It physically shaped our city as we recovered from the devastation, and resulted in creating a community who dig in and do what’s next to build a strong future. You may have seen notice of the Christmas tree that is donated to Boston each year. We do this to thank them for all they did to help us in the time of the explosion. We are a community who values and honours those in need and those who help.
The second anniversary today is that of the Massacre at Polytechnique in Montreal. On this day in 1989 30 women were targeted and shot in their classes. They were separated from their male classmates and executed by a shooter who was ‘fighting feminism’. This event shaped the lives of the survivors in ways they never imagined. One survivor credits his raising of his daughter to be passionate about science and to challenge the sexist boundaries wherever she finds them. Perhaps this is our take away: let us look at the best person for the job, not the best colour, or sex, age, or last name. We are all people in search of what strengths can we use to make this world a better place. We are Canadian.
